Viscounts Cobham (1718)

The Temple family descended from Peter Temple of Burton Dassett. His younger son Anthony Temple founded the Irish branch of the family from whom the Viscounts Palmerston descended. Peter Temple's eldest son, John Temple, acquired the Stowe estate in Buckinghamshire. The latter's son Thomas Temple was created a Baronet, of Stowe in the County of Buckingham, in the Baronetage of England.

This Irish branch of the Temple family was distantly related to the great English house of the same name.

Sir Richard Temple, 4th Baronet (1669–1749) 1st Viscount Cobham, Baron Cobham. with remainder, failing heirs male of his own, to (1) his sister Hester Temple and the heirs male of her body and failing which to (2) his third sister Lady Christian, wife of Sir Thomas Lyttelton of Frankley, 4th Baronet, (see below).

The earldom of Temple of Stowe was created with remainder, failing male issue of his own, to (1) the heirs male of the body of his deceased great-grandmother Hester Grenville, 1st Countess Temple, and (2) in default thereof to his granddaughter Lady Anne Eliza Mary Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville, daughter of his son Richard, Earl Temple, who succeeded as second Duke. He inserted "Brydges-Chandos" into his name by Royal Warrant in 1799, his wife being only daughter and heiress of the 3rd Duke of Chandos (see below).

Earls Temple of Stowe (1822, from 1889)

  • William Stephen Temple-Gore-Langton, (1847–1902) 4th Earl Temple of Stowe, nephew of 3rd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos and eldest son of Lady Anna Grenville, daughter of Richard Temple-Grenville, 2nd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos and her husband William Gore-Langton. He inherited the earldom according to the special remainder.

This family was the senior branch of the Pitts, but distantly related.

Lyttleton


Sir Thomas de Littleton (c. 1407-1481), In 1466 he was made a judge of the , and in 1475 a knight of the Bath. Littleton’s surname was that of his mother, who was the sole daughter and heiress of Thomas de Littleton, Lord of Frankley. She married one Thomas Westcote.
He had three sons:

  • Sir William Lyttelton of Frankley, ancestor of the Lyttelton of Frankley, Baronets, Barons Lyttelton, Viscounts Cobham and Viscounts Chandos.
  • Richard Lyttelton, ancestor of the Littelton of Pillaton, Baronets and Barons Hatherton.
  • Thomas Lyttelton, ancestor of the Littelton of Stoke Milburgh, Baronets and Baron Lyttleton of Mounslow.
