Este Lords of Ferrara, Modena and Reggio
1264-1450

• Obizzo II d'Este (1247– 1293), Marquis of Ferrara and the March of Ancona. In 1264 he was proclaimed life-long ruler of Ferrara, Lord of Modena in 1288 and of Reggio in 1289.

• Niccolò III d'Este ( 1383– 1441), Marquess of Ferrara from 1393. Augmentation granted in 1431 by Charles VII, King of France

Este Dukes of Ferrara, Modena and Reggio
1450-1597

• Borso d'Este ( 1413- 1471) Duke of Ferrara, Modena and Reggio (Marquess until 1450). Augmentation granted in 1452 by the Emperor Frederick III.

• Ercole I d'Este (1431–1505), Duke of Ferrara, Modena and Reggio from 1471. In 1474 Ercole I. was granted by Sixtus IV the papal keys.

• Alfonso d'Este ( 1476– 1534), , Modena and Reggio from 1505. The tiara was added to the keys in 1508.

1597- 1796

• Cesare d'Este ( 1561- 1628), Duke of Modena and Reggio from 1597. During his reign, in 1598, the house of Este lost the Duchy of Ferrara.

• Ercole III Rinaldo d'Este, ( 1727- 1803), Duke of Modena and Reggio from 1780 to 1796.

• Francis IV, (1779-1846), Duke of Modena, Reggio and Mirandola (from 1815), Duke of Massa and Prince of Carrara (from 1829), Archduke of Austria-Este, Royal Prince of Hungary and Bohemia.

• Francis V, ( 1819– 1875), Duke of Modena , Reggio, and Mirandola, Duke of Massa and Prince of Carrara from 1846 to 1875. Archduke of Austria-Este, Royal Prince of Hungary and Bohemia. Founded the Order of the Eagle of Este in 1855.

• Franz Ferdinand (1863–1914), Archduke of Austria-Este, Prince Imperial of Austria and Royal Prince of Hungary and of Bohemia, and from 1889, heir presumptive to the throne. His assassination provoked the start of World War I.
